The combination of these issues – preventing contamination, algae growth and siltation and, above all, evaporation loss – now has an infinitely simple and highly effective solution: Euro-Matic cover balls. These black, weather-resistant plastic balls cover 91% of the water’s surface, thereby also reducing evaporation loss by 90%. As the balls do not allow light to penetrate below the surface, algae and aquatic plants have difficulty colonizing the water, and nesting birds will also avoid the area (there have been cases where farmers have been unable to use their own water reserves, as they had become a nesting site for protected birds in the meantime).
Certain types of cover balls can remain in place at wind speeds up to 150 km/h, will “automatically” follow shifts in water level, and will not obstruct water movements, such as pumping or boat traffic. Meanwhile, it is significantly cheaper to preserve an existing volume of water with cover balls (and keep reusing the balls for decades) than to obtain the same volume again for irrigation during a period of drought.

Depending on the amount of balls placed on a given surface, they can cover up 91% of the surface in a regular shape, self-arranging next to each other. This cover layer separates and isolates the open surface of the liquid from its surroundings, i.e. it significantly reduces the effect of the liquid on the environment and vice versa.
